1. Apple plans to move more iPhone battery production to India

According to multiple sources, Apple has notified component suppliers that it prefers to purchase iPhone 16 batteries from Indian factories. Apple has increasingly focused its device manufacturing in India after relying primarily on China for most of the past decade to produce its devices. Over the past year, India has only allowed Apple's Chinese component suppliers to do business after finding a local joint venture partner. Three people familiar with the matter said that battery manufacturers such as China's Desai were encouraged to build new factories in India, while Xinpu Technology was asked to expand production scale in India to cope with future orders.

Apple's sales in India have grown significantly in recent years. With India becoming Apple's next key market after China, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that 12% to 14% of global ‌iPhone‌ shipments are made in India, with this proportion increasing to 20% to 25% by 2024. %. Trial production of the standard iPhone 17 will begin in India in the second half of 2020. 2025 will mark the first time Apple begins developing new iPhones outside of China.

 

2. Vietnam attracted US$28.8 billion in foreign investment in the first 11 months, the highest level of disbursed funds in five years

In the first 11 months of this year, Vietnam's public investment funds were VND 461 trillion, an increase of 6.7% over the same period in 2022, and higher than the VND 122.6 trillion in 2022. In terms of attracting foreign investment, the country attracted US$28.8 billion in foreign investment in the first 11 months, of which US$20.2 billion was disbursed. This is the highest level of funding in five years.

On December 6, experts from Vietnam’s Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM) said that Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate is expected to reach 5.19% in 2023, lower than the 8.02% growth rate in 2022.

Data show that in the first 11 months of this year, Vietnam’s public investment funds were 461 trillion VND (equivalent to 140.471 billion yuan), an increase of 6.7% over the same period in 2022, and higher than 122.6 trillion VND in 2022. 3. Apple plans to launch M3 MacBook Air in March 2024

In order to reverse the decline in computer sales, Apple plans to launch a MacBook Air equipped with an M3 chip around March 2024 .

Apple plans to release several new models early next year, including a MacBook Air equipped with an M3 chip and two updated iPads, to reverse the declining sales of its Mac business, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to reports, the new iPad is expected to be launched around the end of March, and the company is also developing improved versions of the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories for the Pro model of the device. The new iPad Air will be available in two sizes for the first time, while the Pro model of the device will feature an OLED screen. Among them, MacBook Air will be equipped with a faster M3 processor designed in-house. Apple previously stated that the M3 series of chips brings more powerful performance and extraordinary new features to MacBook Pro. This means that the CPU and GPU performance of the new MacBook Pro equipped with M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will be significantly improved.

 

4. Top ten revenue rankings and changes of global wafer foundries in Q1Q2Q3, 2023

On December 6, according to TrendForce Consulting research, the output value of the top ten wafer foundries in the third quarter of 2023 was US$28.29 billion, a month-on-month increase of 7.9%.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) ranks first with a market share of 57.9%. Third-quarter revenue increased 10.2% quarter-on-quarter to $17.25 billion. Among them, 3nm accounted for 6% of revenue in the third quarter, while TSMC’s overall advanced process (7nm and below) revenue accounted for nearly 60%.

Samsung ranked second with a market share of 12.4%. Revenue in the third quarter reached US$3.69 billion, an increase of 14.1% from the previous quarter. GlobalFoundries ranks third with a market share of 6.2%. In the third quarter, wafer shipments and average sales unit price were the same as in the second quarter, and revenue was also similar to the second quarter, about US$1.85 billion.

United Microelectronics (UMC) has a market share of 6%, and its ranking revenue decreased slightly by 1.7% quarter-on-quarter to approximately US$1.8 billion. Among them, 28/22nm revenue increased by nearly 10% quarter-on-quarter, accounting for 32%.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) has a market share of 5.4%. Also benefiting from the seasonal factors of consumer products, especially urgent orders related to smartphones, third-quarter revenue increased by 3.8% quarter-on-quarter to US$1.62 billion.

In addition, Hua Hong Semiconductor, Tower Semiconductor, World Advanced Semiconductor, Intel, and Power Semiconductor ranked among the top ten.

 

5. Global PC shipments are expected to grow by 8% in 2024, with Greater China experiencing the lowest growth in the world.

A report from Canalys predicts that global PC shipments are about to recover after seven consecutive quarters of decline. The nearly two-year decline will finally end in the fourth quarter of this year, driven by a strong holiday season and an improving macroeconomic environment. The market will return to 5% growth in the fourth quarter of 2023.

More growth is expected in 2025, with PC shipments expected to increase 8% from 2023. Canalys expects rising interest in artificial intelligence and the arrival of ARM-powered PCs to drive this growth.

The impact of AI on the PC industry will be profound, with leading companies in original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), processor manufacturers, and operating system providers working to launch new AI-enabled models in 2024. These initiatives will boost demand for renewals, especially in the commercial segment. Canalys predicts that by 2024, total shipments of PCs with AI capabilities are expected to be approximately 19%. By 2026, ARM chips will account for 30% of the PC market.
